Italy toy store opens at 4 a.m. to help frantic...
After putting her two toddlers to bed on Christmas Eve, the mother went down to the basement storage room of the apartment block in northern Italy where she had hidden them, only to find that they had been stolen, according to Italian media reports. Police found out about the theft while the mother was frantically making the rounds of all-night petrol stations looking for substitute gifts so her...

Yet another update
They do need to be removed. Gah. The doctor said there should be “little to no scarring”, which would be good news except I thought it was more like a needle draining rather than actually putting me on full anesthesia and cutting me open. Still, very minor surgery, no rush to get it done, everything’s fine. I promise to try my hardest to get a computer right after the lumpectomy...

Good news!
Looks like I won’t be dying just yet. Those lumps in my breasts are totes benign. Appointment with my doctor tomorrow to determine whether they still need to be removed, but at least the sense of urgency’s gone.

A validation of my doctoral work
soynido: proustianmemory: “The planetary success of One Hundred Years of Solitude abruptly changed this situation: García Márquez’s prose dazzled European and North American readers to such a degree that, after millions of copies were sold, magical realism became paradigmatic, and after being called sell-outs in their own countries, the Boom ended up as the incarnation of Latin America’s...

poemsarecool: so. after seeing a smattering of posts quoting italo calvino, and reblogs of those posts, and looking at his books on amazon, i decided to buy if on a winter’s night a traveler. thanks to the rain, the snow was finally melted enough for me to get my car out of the driveway. so, i went to barnes and noble, and it was just as wonderful as i remember it being (bookstores are my...

Cities & Desire 2
lafave: At the end of three days, moving southward, you come upon Anastasia, a city with concentric canals watering it and kites flying over it. I should now list the wares that can profitably be bought here: agate, onyx, chrysoprase, and other varieties of chalcedony; I should praise the flesh of the golden pheasant cooked here over fires of seasoned chery wood and sprinkled with much sweet...

lafave: My return was sweet, my home refound, but my thoughts were filled only with grief at having lost her, and my eyes gazed at the Moon, forever beyond my reach, as I sought her. And I saw her. She was there where I had left her, lying on a beach directly over our heads, and she said nothing. She was the color of the Moon; she held the harp at her side and moved one hand ...

lafave: In the shop window you have promptly identified the cover with the title you were looking for. Following this visual trail, you have forced your way through the shop past the thick barricade of Books You Haven’t Read, which were frowning at you from the tables and shelves, trying to cow you. But you know you must never allow yourself to be awed, that among them there extend for acres and...

More and More
poemsarecool: More and more frequently the edges of me dissolve and I become a wish to assimilate the world, including you, if possible through the skin like a cool plant’s tricks with oxygen and live by a harmless green burning. I would not consume you or ever finish, you would still be there surrounding me, complete as the air. Unfortunately I don’t have leaves. Instead I have eyes and teeth...
