Eeeeeeeeeeee I'm gonna be an auntie!!!!*
I’m so excited I cried a little when I found out.
*I have a 19-year-old niece and 16-year-old nephew via eldest brother, which is too close to my age to be very exciting; and a 7-year-old step-nephew from currently-expecting brother whom I’ve only known since he was about 4/5, so as much as I love him it’s still not quite the same. So I’m counting this as my first real...

The Excel from which I’m working right now has a category named “Temporary Positions - Non-Cryonic Illnesses.” I know that that’s a typo and they meant “chronic”, but this, along with the other big category, “Temporary Positions - Organic”, make me think I may be unknowingly working in a secret cool sci-fi facility.

Apparently I missed big Sherlock news yesterday! Whineandbeer shares my feelings pretty exactly, so I won’t repeat them.
Except I just wrote about 80 tags about it.

Fried Seafood: How-to
fdfaumders:
As promised, here are the very simple instructions for frying scallops, shrimp, squid, and oysters. (Side note: squid is super inexpensive. I like a mix of tentacles and rings, so you just buy a mix and cut the bodies into the rings. Also, be aware that the tentacles cause the oil to fly up and hit you, so stand back!)
1. Take a sleeve of original saltine crackers and either put...

Don’t mind me. I’m just cranky because I left the bar at which I was hanging out with my friends earlyish (2am) because I had work today and needed some sleep. Then roommate burst into our loft-style apartment* at 4-4:30 and proceeded to stomp like a rhinoceros all over the place, make himself a snack by heating things several times in the microwave, and bumping a glass so that it fell...
Don't lie to me, Argentina →
Anyone read this note in the latest The Economist? Do you see what this government is doing for our credibility, for our ability to attract investors?
And yes, I will bring up the subsidies/social spending issue again because it makes me simultaneously so mad and so defeated - day before yesterday there was a big train crash here, 50 people died, and all because the trains were (are!) in a state...

What Lot’s Wife Would Have Said (If She Wasn’t A Pillar of Salt)
Do you remember when we met in Gomorrah? When you were still beardless, and I would oil my hair in the lamp light before seeing you, when we were young, and blushed with youth like bruised fruit. Did we care then what our neighbors did in the dark?
When our first daughter...

Manny: What sort of world is it that you can’t go away and leave the front door open without getting robbed? Bernard: It’s this sort of world, Gandalf!
Oh man, does this mean I’ll soon get locked out in inclement weather and end up working in the food service industry? Because I think I’d rather just stay in the rain...

New roommate arrived yesterday
I just got in from work and found the door unlocked and all the balcony windows/doors open, but no roommate. So… either he just walked downstairs for a bit, in which case I need to let him know that he still needs to lock the door, or he actually went out and left everything open, in which case I might gently kill him.

For the record, I’m not giving up anything this year because 1. I forgot, and 2. I can’t think of anything good off-hand.

I actually kinda like Lent
Not in the “FEEL GUILTY YOU SINNER” sense, but then I’ve never carried much in the way of Catholic guilt. I wouldn’t give up something just for the sake of giving it up, but I do like the idea of using it as a set amount of time in which to do something good for yourself.
For example, one year I gave up alcohol to give my body some time off (shockingly easy!) One year I...

I think anyone can email abuse@tumblr.com. Go do it now.
Seriously, I haven’t seen my dogs in over a month because my parents took them with them to our vacation place. I’m so excited about joining them there for a few days, I almost literally skipped out of the office today.
Probably won’t be around much, if at all, until Wednesday, so if anything interesting happens, drop me an ask please!

What Would Agatha Christie Have Thought of Downton... →
alpha-lima-lima:
Found this via the Agatha Christie Facebook page.
The answer is, no one really knows, but there’s a nice list of recommended Christie books with Downton-like settings.
I endorse this list.

Feel free to reblog that last post, by the way. My purpose was to inform people. I don’t care who knows how I identify, and I’m impervious to idiots on the internet - I’ll only get upset if someone I respect is being mean, otherwise I laugh evilly in their faces while strumming my fingers together. Like so:

Big fact you should know about the ace/demi/grace communities: this kind of abuse isn’t exceptional. On the Tumblrs, it becomes a whole big thing pretty regularly, actually - at least once a month - and the rest of the time, it’s because people forget we exist, we have so little presence. And we’re thankful for that.
This is how it works within the community in a situation like...

– Actual work email I just wrote and almost sent. Apparently late-night Skype commiserating with my best friend and some whiskey is bad for early-morning brain functions.

As usual, Kelsium knows what’s up.
Eugh. I’m still feeling more shaken up than I care to admit. I mean, I guess it is pretty upsetting to be told “keep eating you fucking bitch if you scream I’ll kill you my partner’s watching us from behind and I’ll kill you even with those cops over there.” And I guess it’s good that I’m able to keep my cool when I’m actually in a bad...

I’m fine. He was trying to be all casual and sat down beside me when I was having lunch in the park, and asked for things softly one at a time, so I gave him some of my money (didn’t take the wallet out of my purse, so he didn’t see I kept some), then told him that I believed him that he had a partner watching us, then convinced him to leave me my phone, then reassured him that...

Yet another demi post.
Now that I’ve had time to think about this more calmly, here are my thoughts on the recent ace/demi debacle.
I understand and accept that, when you choose to belong to a community, you have to take responsibility not only for your own actions and words, but for those of the community as a whole. Such is the case with feminism, with its large history of discrimination towards POC and trans*...

100% salary increase for members of the Argentine congress.
Right after the president came out to say that there would be a “fine-tuning” of the economy, and that normal-people salaries will have smaller increases than average - increases well below the inflation rate.

– Polyglot Vs. Translator at Publishing Perspectives (via hmhlit)
Ugh. I STRONGLY disagree. We all are polyglots, we all are Marco Polo. The only thing that separates translators and polyglots who don’t translate is that the latter, in fact, don’t translate. You have to like the creative part of...

Last night I went for exhausted drinks with my best friend. Exhausted because I’d had a very early morning, and because I knew I’d have an early morning today too, but friend had been asking to get together for a bit so I felt bad saying no.
Friend gave me very lovely belated birthday present.
I promptly forgot birthday present at bar, or possibly taxi.
It seems I missed out on some interesting...

Italy is a very complex country that has been both idealized and negatively reduced way too much. It has beautiful, amazing, creative aspects; which makes it all the more frustrating that it can also be corrupt, inefficient, and, in many ways, antiquated. It’s also only been a unified country for...
